SCHISTO DERE LAKSI Project follow-up

2017 SKINPACT Awarded project using entertainment to educate in poverty stricken Filipino province

SCHISTO DERE LAKSI, an entertaining community schistosomal rash education initiative, targeting the endemic Eastern Samar region in the Philippines, proudly received the 2017 SKINPACT Community Vote Award in the Excellence in Education category.

The mass appeal approach will feature a film and comic book to educate the community on prevention and early recognition of Schistosomiasis, leading to early diagnosis and treatment in the second poorest province of the Philippines.

In this province, where even health workers are unaware of the schistosomal rash, the 5-stage project led by Dr Mirla Celina TAIRA in affiliation with Dionisio Cornel Medical Center, Inc., will utilize the film and comic book in a series of community workshops.

A special effort to engage children will be made as primary infection via continuous use of infested freshwater, lack of toilet facilities, and poor sanitation, can happen 10-15 years before symptoms manifest.
